Mega-decorated surfaces that coruscate with lines and shapes and curves and closely-related color-values, and… oh, bother all that, what Amara Por Dios is all about is serious, post-psychedelic fun. It’s street art, brought indoors, cleaned up a bit, but never tamed.

Por Dios combines playful abstractions of faces, body parts, and… well, other stuff for a result that is both cartoonish and strangely meditative. She takes the idea of “crowd scene” to the next level.

It’s art you can look at, live with, or even wear. (And, sometimes, it’s art made from things she once wore.)

Since it’s possible that the universe may turn out to consist of little more than vibrations, it makes perfect sense to create textiles out of sound. Sound stored, of course, on recording tape.

Sonic Fabric is just that: it’s woven from 50% polyester thread, and 50% audiocassette tape. The sound recorded on the tape is, itself, a woven collage, originally intended for installation artworks, of looped, layered, created, and collected sounds.

The project is the brainchild of installation artist Alyce Santoro. As a child, she enjoyed sailing toy sailboats. Strips of cassette tape were attached to the sails as “tell-tails” that stream in the wind and show the shape of the wind coming off the sails. She liked to imagine that the sounds recorded on the tape strips could somehow come off the tape and be transmitted through the wind.

Years later, she learned about Tibetan prayer flags. These colorful strips of cloth are imprinted with images of mantras or sacred sounds, and hung in sacred sites. Through the medium of the wind, they send their imprinted mantras around the world.

Santoro sensed a relationship between the prayer flags and her tell-tails. The idea inspired her to create a textile that has sonic impressions woven into it — using magnetic tape from audiocassettes.

Each finger painting is unique and created through direct contact of an inked finger on tracing paper over an iPhone, as the artist, Evan Roth, opens, checks, and closes Twitter. There is one painting for each day of the month of September 2011.

New York City based Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre presents the world premiere of Bound, an evening length dance theater performance commissioned by the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center on October 21-22, at 7:30pm. Created in collaboration with artists in the Middle East through an innovative online rehearsal process using video conferencing and the web; Bound explores the adaptability of the human spirit through the stories of nine individuals living under occupation.

Integrating Skype into her creative process after her temporary relocation to Ramallah, choreographer Samar Haddad King found new ways to connect with her dancers in New York. “It began as a necessity but developed into an inspiration for the piece.” King says. “Experiencing the current situation in the Middle East while continuing my work with dance in New York through Skype, I began noticing that there are barriers everywhere. Hopefully audiences will identify with the work and find new ways to navigate through their own boundaries and feelings of occupation.”

For the duration of the performance, a fearless ensemble of dancers will scale buildings, brave ledges and paint walls in an effort to retain a sense of normalcy in an environment of chaos and impending ruin. The original score by Palestinian composer/musician boikutt incorporates natural and industrial noises with elements of hip-hop, experimental and ambient music to create a driving and rhythmic urban landscape for this multimedia production.
