In 2011, U2 returned to Hansa Studios in Berlin to discuss the making of Achtung Baby. From The Sky Down, is a documentary film directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (It Might Get Loud, Waiting for Superman, An Inconvenient Truth). Screened in the UK as part of the BBC’s Imagine Series, From The Sky Down was the first ever documentary film to open the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. From The Sky Down includes bonus footage of So Cruel, Love Is Blindness, and The Fly shot in May 2011 during the band’s visit to Hansa Studios to mark the 20th anniversary of Achtung Baby; as well as a Q&A with Bono, The Edge and Davis Guggenheim filmed at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2011. Twenty years after the release of U2′s Achtung Baby (1991), Davis Guggenheim charts the path toward this groundbreaking album. Guggenheim uses animation and unseen footage from Berlin and Dublin alongside conversation to reveal what is now a key chapter in U2 s career.

Loud music. Pornography. Lighting fires. These are a few of Hesher’s favorite things. And they are what Hesher brings into the lives of TJ and his father Paul when he takes up residence in the garage uninvited. Grief stricken by the loss of TJ’s mother, Paul can’t muster the strength to evict the strange squatter and soon the long-haired, tattooed Hesher becomes a fixture in the household. Like a force of nature, Hesher’s anarchy shakes the family out of their grief and helps them embrace life once more. Amazing movie check it out.

Everybody knew stories about old Felix Bush. Bad stories. Stories that got worse in the retelling, because they were too horrible to tell. Kids would challenge each other to get close enough to his shack to throw stones at the windows, and then run away in terror. On his rare appearances in town, people would stare and avoid any contact with him.

So, understandably, it causes a stir when he shows up at the local church with a wad of hoarded cash, wanting to purchase a funeral. Rebuffed by the minister, he turns to the local funeral home, but the reaction to his request is consternation. Wanting a funeral home to arrange a funeral would seem to be a straightforward proposal, except for one thing: the funeral Mr. Bush wants is his own, and he wants to be present at it. Before he dies.

He terms it a “funeral party,” to which everyone is invited; and furthermore, Mr. Bush encourages everyone who has a story to tell about him to come tell it. To everyone. In his presence. Here’s the crux of the movie. Because everyone has stories to tell about Mean Old Mr. Bush; but no one is willing to risk his ire by telling them.

You and I, though, as moviegoers viewing Get Low, the new film directed by Aaron Schneider, and written by Chris Provenzano and C. Gaby Mitchell, immediately recognize this as an almost universal desire. Everybody wants to know what other people really think of them; and no one wants it more, perhaps, than a man who has been unjustly condemned and ostracized, all his long life.

Because we do get a sense that the other side of Mr. Bush’s story has gone untold… but that, whatever it is, it’s something that he, himself, is so violently ashamed of that he doesn’t trust even himself to tell it. And so the story unfolds, through various peoples’ subjective memories.

The movie is rendered all the more interesting in that it is based on a true story. In 1938, in Roane County, Tennessee, local hermit Felix “Bush” Breazeale hosted a “funeral party,” complete with pall bearers and coffin. The “corpse” made no pretense of actually being dead, but instead sat and chatted with the “mourners.” It was a much-publicized event, said to have drawn a crowd of 8,000, from far places like Chattanooga (and farther), and generated much notoriety for many years afterward, earning Mr. Breazeale the nickname, “The Living Corpse.”

That’s about as far as the similarities go, of course, between the real 1938 Funeral Party and the movie. The point of Get Low lies not with the events being recounted, but with their effects on the people involved. The experience is made compelling by the pristine cinematography, and the performances by Bill Murray (as the worldly funeral home director), Sissy Spacek (as a woman who shares a mysterious past with the story’s principal), and, most of all, by Robert Duvall, as Old Man Bush.

There is no actor alive who can portray authenticity as thoroughly as Robert Duvall. Watching Get Low‘s Felix Bush on screen, any lingering notion that you are watching a superlative craftsman falls away. Instead, the sense is unavoidable that you are, somehow, being given a window into the very life of this character. It is less a moviegoing experience than a witnessing of events, from a place of rare empathy, compassion, and brutal honesty.

Broadcast by ABC in the mid 80s, this series quickly became a massive hit.
