Department of Eagles In Ear Park

Friday, October 10th, 2008

In Ear Park is a colorful and expansive album, an intimate and personal collection of songs; much of the material that Daniel brought to In Ear Park draws on memories from his childhood, especially those relating to his father, who passed away in 2007 and to whom the album is dedicated (the title track is a nickname for a park in Los Angeles that the two used to visit). Many of Fred’s contributions relate to similar themes of nostalgia and mortality, giving the album at times an elegiac feel. In Ear Park is also full of joyful moments, lush production and concise songwriting. From the early demos to the final mix, it took roughly four years for the group to complete this new collection of eleven songs.

Japanese Motors

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008
JMcover_3x3_300dpi_1.jpg

Japanese Motors are the most exciting band to emerge from Orange County since the heyday of Social Distortion and TSOL. They’re known around Southern California for the insane, all night blowouts they put on as much as for the driving, raucous garage pop they set the partying to. The music is as sun-baked and laid-back as their coastal environs and rife with positive imagery.

Dustin O’Halloran Piano Solos, Vol 2

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Piano Solos, Vol 2 is a timeless array of concertos that fluidly cascade from serene to demanding, seemingly crying out to tell a story with each note. The cinematic opus unravels as if allowing a glimpse into O’Halloran’s soul, or a soundtrack to his memories. The heart-swelling compositions appear fragile, yet haunting, capturing moments of melancholic bliss, brimming with introspection. O’Halloran’s music has received 4 Star review form both MOJO magazine and Vanity Fair. With both the recent Devics albums as well as his stunning piano pieces getting radio play on the likes of L.A.’s highly-influential KCRW, O’Halloran is now getting the attention he’s long deserved. His work seduced renowned music supervisor Brian Reitzell, who asked him to assist with the score for Sofia Coppola’s epic historical drama, Marie Antoinette, ultimately contributing three songs to the film and soundtrack. This lead to him scoring two independent films scheduled for release in 2008: Beautiful Ordinary and Boy of Pigs.

The Panics Cruel Guards

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008
CoverArt.jpg

Despite what their name might suggest, Australian indie rockers, The Panics, don’t evoke a sense of chaos or hysteria.  In fact, they offer the exact opposite: interweaving melodies and atmospheres over landscapes of rousing instrumentation. This is for fans of similarly evocative artists from “down under,” which might include The Church, The Go-Betweens, Sleepy Jackson, The Triffids, Augie March, and Nick Cave. The band’s debut U.S release, Cruel Guards features 10 wondrous songs that drip with a sense of pride in their well-honed musicianship and deeply Australian roots.
