Review: Alice in Chains Black Gives Way to Blue
In their new album, Black Gives Way to Blue, Alice in Chains debuts their first effort after the loss of lead singer Layne Staley in 2002. William DuVall joined the band as the new vocalist, and although his vocals are different from Staley’s, they still manage to fit with the band’s classic sound. Guitarist Jerry Cantrell holds the music in the place where it is meant to be, still having the incredible talent to take over a song with his solos.
Many of the songs are reminiscent of Staley, making it feel as though he is still present within the album. The lyrics and tones are full or respect and sadness for the singer, as Alice in Chains reinvents themselves as a band, but don’t forget where they started.
The title track, “Black Gives Way to Blue,” is a tribute to Staley. Elton John is featured on piano and Cantrell covers the vocals, saying goodbye to Staley through the music he helped create.
